A large-scale study of Google Business Profiles put numbers to something local SEO practitioners have argued about for years. Most of the findings are unglamorous, which is exactly why they are useful.
The short version
Analysis of a very large sample of Google Business Profiles consistently finds the same pattern: completeness, category accuracy, review volume and review recency correlate with visibility far more strongly than any clever tactic. The businesses that rank locally are usually the ones that filled the profile in properly and kept it current.
What consistently correlates with visibility
- The primary category being right. This is the single most influential field and it is frequently wrong. A diagnostic centre listed as a general clinic competes in the wrong set of searches entirely.
- Profile completeness. Services listed individually, hours accurate, description written, attributes set. Most profiles we take over are roughly half filled in.
- Review volume and recency. Not just how many, but whether they are still arriving. A profile with steady recent reviews outperforms one with more reviews that stopped two years ago.
- Photographs, updated periodically. Profiles with recent images perform better than those with none or with a single photo from years ago.
- Proximity to the searcher. Still a major factor and still not something you can change.
What matters less than people think
Keyword stuffing the business name is both against the rules and a common reason for suspension. Posting daily updates shows little benefit compared with the effort. And obsessing over a single ranking position is misleading, because local results vary by exactly where the searcher is standing.
What to do this week
If you do nothing else: open your profile, check the primary category is the most specific accurate option, list every service separately, correct your hours including festival closures, and add five recent photographs. That is perhaps ninety minutes of work and it is the highest-return ninety minutes available to most local businesses in Kolkata.
Then start asking satisfied customers for reviews, consistently rather than in a burst. Our local SEO page covers the full process, and the locations hub explains how area-level relevance fits alongside it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most important Google Business Profile field?
The primary category, and it is frequently wrong. It determines which set of searches you compete in at all. A diagnostic centre listed as a general clinic is competing for the wrong queries no matter what else it does well.
How many Google reviews do I need to rank locally?
There is no threshold. A steady flow of genuine reviews arriving over time matters more than a large number that stopped years ago, and responding to them matters as much as receiving them.
Can I put keywords in my business name to rank better?
No. It breaches Google's guidelines and is one of the more common reasons profiles get suspended. The short-term gain is not worth losing the listing that brings you customers.
