What is an SEO audit?
An SEO audit is a structured examination of a website’s technical health, content and search visibility, producing a prioritised list of the problems holding it back. A useful audit explains what each issue costs the business and what fixing it is likely to achieve, rather than simply listing every warning a crawling tool produces.
The distinction is worth dwelling on, because most things sold as SEO audits are automated tool exports. A crawler will happily report nine hundred issues on a small website. Perhaps twelve of them matter. An audit that does not tell you which twelve has moved the work onto you rather than done it.
When an audit is the right thing to buy
- Traffic or enquiries have dropped and nobody can explain why
- You are paying for SEO and cannot tell whether you are getting value
- A site has recently been redesigned or migrated and performance fell
- You are about to invest in SEO and want an independent view before committing
- You are buying a business or a domain and need to know what you are acquiring
- Good content is being published and none of it ranks
If you already know your site is technically sound and simply need more visibility, an audit is a detour. Go straight to SEO.
What the audit covers
Technical health
Crawling, indexing, status codes, redirect chains, canonical handling, duplicate URLs, sitemap and robots configuration, structured data validity, and Core Web Vitals measured on mobile.
Content and keyword coverage
What you rank for now, what you should be able to rank for, where pages compete with each other for the same term, and which pages are too thin to earn anything.
Site architecture
How pages are organised and linked, how deep important pages sit, which pages have no internal links at all, and whether the structure communicates priority.
Local visibility
Google Business Profile completeness, business information consistency, review position, and location relevance where the business serves a defined area.
Competitors
Who is actually taking the visibility you want, what they have that you do not, and whether closing that gap is realistic within a sensible budget.
Conversion path
What happens after someone arrives. There is little value in fixing rankings for a page that gives visitors no clear way to make contact, and we would rather tell you that before you spend on traffic.
AI and answer engine readiness
Whether your content is structured so AI systems can retrieve and cite it, and whether your business entity is stated consistently enough for them to resolve it. Covered in depth under AI SEO.
What you receive
- A findings document written in plain language, ordered by commercial impact rather than by tool severity rating
- For each finding: what is wrong, what it is costing, what fixing it involves, and an honest view of whether it is worth doing
- Specifications precise enough for your own developer to act on
- A walkthrough call so you can ask questions rather than interpreting a PDF alone
The audit is deliberately sold as a standalone piece of work. You are free to take the findings to any developer or agency, including your current one. If you would rather we implemented them, we will quote separately.
Cost and timeline
Cost depends on site size and complexity. A small local business site is a straightforward piece of work. A large store or a multi-location site with years of accumulated history takes considerably longer.
Turnaround is typically one to two weeks. We would rather take the extra days and give you something you can act on than return a tool export in forty-eight hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is included in an SEO audit?
Technical health including crawling, indexing and Core Web Vitals, content and keyword coverage, site architecture and internal linking, local visibility, a competitor comparison, a review of the conversion path, and an assessment of how ready your content is for AI and answer engines. You receive prioritised findings and a walkthrough call.
How long does an SEO audit take?
Typically one to two weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the site. We would rather take the extra days and give you something genuinely actionable than return an automated tool export within forty-eight hours.
Do I have to use you to implement the fixes?
No. The audit is deliberately sold as a standalone piece of work, and the findings are written so any competent developer or agency can act on them, including your current one. If you would like us to implement them, we will quote separately.
How is this different from a free SEO report?
Free reports are automated crawls that list every warning a tool can generate, often several hundred on a small site. They do not tell you which findings matter commercially. Our audit prioritises by business impact and explicitly tells you which issues are not worth fixing.
We already have an agency. Is an independent audit worth it?
Often, yes. If you are paying monthly and cannot tell what you are getting, an independent view is a reasonable way to find out. We will tell you plainly if the work being done looks sound, which is sometimes the answer.
