How to Use Google Analytics to Improve Your SEO (Properly)

Google Analytics will not improve your rankings. What it will do is tell you which of your SEO work is actually earning enquiries, which is the harder and more useful question.

Why most businesses get nothing from their analytics

Almost every business website in Kolkata has Google Analytics installed. Very few use it for anything beyond glancing at a visitor count. The reason is straightforward: the default setup measures traffic, and traffic is not what anyone is actually trying to grow.

The businesses that get value from analytics do one thing differently. They configure it to measure enquiries, then work backwards to find out which pages and which searches produced them. Everything below assumes that goal.

Set up conversion tracking before anything else

A conversion in Google Analytics is any action you have defined as valuable, such as a form submission, a phone call or a WhatsApp message. Until conversions are configured, analytics can only report how many people visited, which tells you nothing about whether the website is producing business.

In GA4, mark these as key events at minimum:

  • Form submissions. Fire an event on successful submission, not on page load of a thank-you page that people can reach directly.
  • Clicks on your phone number. Track clicks on tel: links. On mobile this is frequently the most common enquiry route and it is invisible by default.
  • WhatsApp clicks. In India this often outperforms every other contact method, and almost nobody measures it.
  • Email clicks. Lower volume, but worth separating.

One caution: do not send names, phone numbers or email addresses into analytics. Beyond being a privacy problem, it breaches Google’s terms and can get the property disabled. Track that a submission happened and which service was selected, not who submitted it.

Connect Search Console, and use it properly

Analytics tells you what people did on your site. Search Console tells you how they found it. Linked together in GA4, they let you see which search queries brought people who then made an enquiry, which is the single most useful view available to a small business.

Look for the gap between impressions and clicks. A page with high impressions and a low click-through rate is ranking but failing to persuade anyone to click. That is a title and meta description problem, and it is usually fixable in an afternoon, which makes it the best return available in SEO.

Find the pages that are quietly working

In GA4, view landing pages sorted by conversions rather than by sessions. The result surprises most business owners. A modest page with two hundred visits and eight enquiries is worth considerably more than a blog post with four thousand visits and none.

Once you know which pages convert, the strategy becomes obvious: get more people to those pages, and make your other pages behave more like them. This is far more productive than trying to increase total traffic, which is the default instinct and usually the wrong one.

Segment by device, because mobile is a different website

Compare conversion rate on mobile against desktop. In most Kolkata businesses we look at, mobile is the majority of traffic and converts noticeably worse. That gap is almost always caused by page speed, forms that are awkward on a phone, or a contact number that is not tappable.

If your mobile conversion rate is materially below desktop, that is a website problem rather than a traffic problem, and it will limit the return on every rupee you spend on SEO or Google Ads until it is fixed.

Filter out your own visits

A small business site with a few hundred monthly visitors can have its data meaningfully distorted by the owner and staff browsing it. Set up an internal traffic filter using your office IP address. It takes ten minutes and it stops you drawing conclusions from your own behaviour.

Look at the reports that actually change decisions

Report The question it answers
Landing pages by conversions Which pages actually produce enquiries
Traffic acquisition Which channels are worth continued investment
Search Console queries Which searches bring people who convert
Device comparison Whether mobile experience is costing you enquiries
Geographic report Which areas your customers genuinely come from

That last one is worth dwelling on for local businesses. If most of your enquiries come from three or four areas of Kolkata, that tells you where to concentrate your local SEO effort, and it is a far better guide than guessing.

What analytics cannot tell you

Be realistic about the limits. Attribution has become considerably less accurate as browsers restrict tracking, so cross-device journeys are frequently misattributed. Someone who finds you on their phone and enquires from a laptop a week later will usually be recorded as two unrelated people.

Use analytics for direction rather than precision. It will reliably tell you that one page converts far better than another, or that mobile is underperforming. It will not give you a perfectly accurate revenue figure per channel, and any agency presenting one as fact is overstating what the tool can do.

Where to start

If you do nothing else from this article, configure conversion tracking for forms, phone clicks and WhatsApp clicks, and link Search Console. That single afternoon of work converts analytics from a vanity dashboard into something that can actually inform decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Analytics affect SEO rankings?

No. Analytics is a measurement tool and installing it does not influence how Google ranks your site. Its value is showing which pages and which searches actually produce enquiries, so you can direct SEO effort at what works rather than guessing.

What should a small business track in GA4?

At minimum: form submissions, clicks on your phone number, WhatsApp clicks and email clicks. On mobile, phone and WhatsApp clicks are frequently the most common enquiry route and are invisible unless you configure them deliberately.

Can I put customer names or emails into Analytics?

No. Sending personally identifiable information into Google Analytics breaches Google's terms and can get the property disabled, aside from being a privacy problem. Track that a submission happened and which service was selected, not who submitted it.
